Matzuwa Oscar

Co-Founder & Director

Matzuwa Oscar comes from the Yoreme people of Sinaloa, Mexico, and has been a dedicated pilgrim of the Wirikuta desert for over 20 years, learning deeply within the Wixarika tradition. Inspired by years of traditional study and collaboration with Indigenous Mexican collectives, Oscar earned his degree from the National Institute of Anthropology and History in Mexico City, specializing in traditional medicine. His thesis explored Peyote's medicinal and ceremonial uses, intending to provide anthropological expertise to support historically marginalized Indigenous communities in preserving their sacred relationships with this cactus, and helping those disconnected from their cultural roots reconnect with these traditions.

Oscar is a co-founder and director of Raíces del Corazón de la Tierra, a cultural association based in Catalunya, Spain. The organization hosted gatherings with Indigenous elders, creating Kivas (sacred ceremonial temples) to pray and make offerings with a four-year commitment from 2012 to 2015. A new Kiva was opened in the UK from 2016 to 2019, furthering this work. These ceremonies provided a platform for cultural exchange, spreading sacred traditions, and planting sweat lodges as healing practices across Europe. Raíces del Corazón de la Tierra has facilitated intercultural collaborations and exchanges in countries including Russia and India. Oscar was central in organizing these gatherings, coordinating spiritual leaders, and fostering cultural preservation and healing.

As director and manager of the Huya Aniwa Project, Oscar continues to share his vast knowledge and experience, which has been built from years of working with and visiting communities worldwide. One notable initiative is his collaboration with Instituto Yorenka Tasorensi, founded by his mentor, Benki Piyãko, where he contributed to the institute’s development and construction. This work reflects his commitment to community empowerment, ecological preservation, and Indigenous cultural advocacy.

Oscar’s spiritual leadership and project management expertise, developed through his work with Raíces del Corazón de la Tierra, have guided Huya Aniwa’s efforts to connect global Indigenous traditions with broader audiences. His work emphasizes creating sacred spaces utilizing sustainable design, promoting healing practices, and fostering cross-cultural understanding, ensuring the survival and growth of ancestral knowledge in the modern world.
